Dollar would not accept my member number at the counter because I had rented through a third party. Thus, I had to pay for my spouse to be a secondary driver. Their response, “take it up with corporate.” I have not had that experience with other car rentals through a third party before. I liked NOTHING. Dollar (or Kayak) completely ignored my request for a car to be picked up in the San Diego Airport area with access to me after I arrived from my flight. Instead, never clearly explained or otherwise made possible, Dollar (or Kayak) chose to rent me a car to be picked up in some alleged place in San Diego that serves some airport in Mexico. When I arrived and took the shuttle from the Airport to the Dollar location, I found a long line of customers and over the next 45 minutes in line watched and discovered that the Dollar agents were trying mercilessly to scam customers into purchasing different cars or pay for extras they did not need. The agents were few in number in low in abilities. No goodwill or effect to truly help customers (many who appeared to leave without a car, all of whom were upset with the service). One agent during the process mentally broke down and left. Others ran off for breaks. When my turn came, I was told they had no reservation for me, and no cars to give me, in any event. When I gave them the number of my reservation, they simply said that was in another office. I asked if there was anything they could do or recommend -- the answer was No. As I left, the agent serving me made a general announcement to the long line of customers that Dollay was not honoring any of the reservations made the day before (whatever that meant). I left with no car and had to take a taxi to my destination, at a cost of $100. Needless to say, I will not again attempt to rent any car from Dollar (or Thrifty) and I will not seek Kayak's assistance in renting cars, likely anything else. Only 2 employees for Dollar/Thrifty could not keep up with a long line of customers. Waited for over an hour, then the type of car we had paid for was not available and there were only pickup trucks left. The vehicle met my needs. But pick up and drop-off could have gone better. I was once a frequent Dollar renter. I was a member of Dollar's frequent renters club. And, I've never encountered such rude counter clerks. Acted as if I was interrupting something that they were doing that was MUCH more important. The camera for videoing the vehicle wasn't working so checkout took twice as long as it should have. Then, to top it off, I didn't notice until I got the vehicle home, It was getting a warning message that the vehicle was due for a oil change. Took it back but they were closed. Called and was told that I could either exchange it at the nearest location - San Diego Airport (30 miles away) or have the oil changed when I reached my destination. Opted to have the oil changed. Cost me a half day of my vacation. When I reached a location where I could have the oil change done, I called Dollar to have them give me a location to have it done. Then, the stupidity truly began. I was in a hotel but she insisted that I give her a street address and Zip code. Gave here an intersection, but nnnnnoooo, not good enough. Had to have street address and Zip Code. Finally provided it and was given a location to have it done. 40 Miles from the address that I gave her. This was all after being on hold for over 20 minutes. Truly the worse rental I've ever had.
