Plan transport after you drop off your rental for anything other than the airport shuttle. Got an Uber with no issues,
Verified travelerAug 2025
Smaller cars definitely do better in Hawaii. Test out that AC before you pull out if you are going to use it. Suggest you take pics and video of the interior and exterior before you leave. Keep your receipts too. Never know when the company will charge you for something bogus.
Verified travelerApr 2025
Don't select the booking agencies insurance. The rental company will say they (the booking agency) will deny your claim and suggest you choose their local insurance coverage instead (which was cheaper)
LeanneMar 2025
Do not book a mystery car, they will give you a car knowingly that will not work for most of the parking areas on Waikiki. It’s all about whatever incentives the agents are given to push people into gas, insurance and vehicle upgrades. Do not buy into the gas package.

I would suggest a small or compact suv vehicle as streets are narrow and rarely any parking.
NicholasJun 2024
Tips: 1. Call ahead to make sure the rental company isn't incompetent. In other words, make sure they understand the definition of reservation and that they actually are going to reserve the vehicle class you select. 2. Double check that the rate you are paying includes all taxes/fees/surcharges/etc. Call them ahead of time if you have to, that way you don't show up and have to shell out more money. 3. Not sure the possibility of this, nor whether you'll have time, but if the car is dirty or has an ant infestation, ask them to clean it before driving it off the lot or ask for a different car.
TerraAug 2024
Book a compact or small truck/suv. The Dodge Ram was way too big. Really inconvenient for parking and narrow roadways on Oahu. Does provide a lot of space if you need it. I also suggest checking the vehicle for damage and documenting it when you pick up and when you drop off. They will hold you responsible for every little thing even if you didn't do it... so take the time to take the photos! Seriously!
Verified travelerAug 2024
Before renting a car. Make sure you have somewhere to park and the price. Some charges I saw were up to $40/day. And I noticed a lot of parking spaces near hotels and condos were hard to find.
DavidJul 2024
If you’re staying in the Hilton Waikiki Village, the cost to park your car is $72/night. There is a parking garage above Red Lobster that is 24 hr parking for $23/night.

Just rent the Tesla and be done with it, the island is confusing and the city is even more confusing just be aware that Pearl city has the only public charger that I’m aware of and the others are private party so you may not be able to use them even though they’re on the map. I picked up Dodge mini-van, for 6 passengers and 6 big suitcases. It was perfectly fit but fuel consumption was no good. There are many road constructions out there, so you should take H1 freeway between airport and waikiki area. Nimitz and Ala-Moana Blvd is no use especially in peak time.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Honolulu
Ready to rent a car on your vacation to Honolulu? If you are traveling to Honolulu International Airport, you will find a wide range of car hire options, both on and off-site. If you want to rent a car directly from the airport, head to the hire offices, which are conveniently located next to the baggage claim at Terminal 1. Alternatively, there are booking desks on the ground level of the Terminal 2 in the Parking Garage. On the ground level of the airport, there is also a car hire shuttle stop in designated areas along the center median, outside of baggage claim areas.
If you want the independence that comes with having your own set of wheels, avoid the slower public transport and less safe mopeds and rent a car in Honolulu. Park up on the coast and witness the natural beauty of Waikiki Beach, or take a road trip out to heights of the Diamond Head volcanic crater for a unique view of Honolulu.
As a visitor of Honolulu, it’s best to steer clear of driving in the Waikiki Beach area, as this is the main tourist hotspot and is naturally very busy. Driving around the town is a lot like navigating through a city so you can expect a slow traffic and lots of pedestrians. You must also embrace the “spirit of Aloha,” as locals are very relaxed when it comes to driving on any Hawaiian roads. Drivers should remember to be polite and make space for merging cars, thanking other road users. Also, unless there’s an emergency, lay off the use of your horn.
Rush hour in Honolulu starts early, as the busy weekday traffic hits from 5 am to 8 am. By the afternoon, rush hour goes from 3 pm to 6:30 pm ,when drivers are outbound. Try to avoid taking your car on the surface streets of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, as these tend to be busy. You should also steer clear of the H-1 and H-2 Interstates, as well as Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard, as traffic is heavy on these routes.

FAQs about renting a car in Honolulu
What type of car is recommended for driving in Honolulu?
If you’re looking to enjoy all the outdoor sights that Honolulu offers, then you must investigate renting either a midsize car or an SUV that can handle the winding coastal roads. You want to rent something that you feel completely comfortable in, as you may end up taking a tour of the whole of Oahu island. A midsize car with good trunk space is ideal. But, if you prefer to soak up the sun, then a convertible would be perfect.
What’s the speed limit in Honolulu?
Across the islands of Hawaii, the speed limits are notoriously low. The limits on the freeways are usually 55 to 60 mph. Thanks to Honolulu’s often narrow and winding highways, high-speed driving is not advised. On some roads even 30 mph is seen as too fast. Watch out for the 35-mph S-curve on the H-1 Interstate heading eastbound, between the 18 and 19 exits, as well as speed enforcement who often patrol in unmarked police cars.
Where are the best places to park in Honolulu?
Honolulu is known to have some of the most expensive parking rates in the country. As expected, parking can be challenging in the tourist areas of Waikiki Beach; however, if you’re a savvy driver, then there are a few free parking areas to take advantage of. You can leave your car all day in Ala Moana as well as in the Waikiki Shell and Ala Wai Canal area, because of their free unlimited streetside parking. Elsewhere, there are 50 parking lots and garages in Honolulu, which can charge as little as $8 per day.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Honolulu?
On average a rental car in Honolulu costs ₱2,766 per day.
Which car rental companies are at Honolulu airport (HNL)?
Which car rental companies will pick you up at Honolulu airport (HNL)?
Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Honolulu airport to off-airport locations include Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis, Budget, and Alamo.

I didn’t realize that jeep was such a weird card to rent. The GPS dropped me in the middle of Honolulu twice when it failed to function. Interface is needlessly complicated with a bunch of switches that are different than other vehicles. That’s confusing. The so-called removable top is actually only two parts. It’s a tee top, but the roof doesn’t come off over the backseats or the way back. Doors slam hard and lack resistance. I will never rent another Jeep unless I absolutely need offloading capability because this made a terrible car to drive around in.

I held my ground and got the car unordered but was terrible customer service and terrible policy and management. Will NEVER use Hertz again and will be telling this story on social media platforms.

It should have been known ahead of me flying in and picking up the car that even with a deposit I would not be allowed to rent certain cars without a credit card. I was willing to double my deposit and buy there insurance but still could not get car I reserved. I normally have my Amex on me but unfortunately left without it. Fortunately I had plenty of cash in my checking account to cover all expenses, so I thought. Really started our vacation out on a very bad start. Ended up with a tiny car for a family of 5 with luggage. If you are willing to over pay for the insurance and put a much larger deposit down. Then why fret over not having a Credit Card. They even ran a credit check when I said I left my Credit Card. It’s only a Jeep not a Maserati.

One of the tires had a leak and we had to re-inflate each morning. The key fob didn't work and we could only lock/unlock the car manually. The Bluetooth/stereo would freeze and re-boot every 10 or 15 minutes of driving, the drivers seatbelt didn't automatically retract anymore and there were random pills in the door pocket when they gave us the car.... Upon arrival the agent was very aggressive with pushing an upgrade. We reserved a mystery car which was described as a potential EV or similar. We were given a suburban which would not fit in the garage. She would only allow us an “upgrade” to receive a standard size vehicle. The service and pressure to pay more are insane! I waited for over 2 hours in line to pick up my vehicle at Avis only to find that none were available. After waiting another 30 minutes, they were able to find me a vehicle. So 2.5 hours of my prepaid vehicle were already gone. Then upon return, I attempted to refuel the vehicle but the gas door would not unlock despite numerous attempts so I was unable to refuel it. This is apparently a known problem on my vehicle (a Kia K5) and could have been a major safety concern if we were left stranded far away from our hotel because of an inability to refuel our vehicle.
