Asheville has plenty to offer, from a vibrant arts scene to historical buildings, and, of course, the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a 1-hour drive from the center. Don’t miss out on any of Asheville’s attractions and rent a car to get the most out of your visit. Many of the outer attractions, including the Blue Ridge Mountains, are not available with public transport and a car will give you the most flexibility to explore the city and surroundings in your own time.
Asheville Regional Airport features five on-site car hire companies which offer vehicles for all tastes. Follow the signs out of the terminal to their service desks and pick up a car to be in Asheville center in less than half an hour via the I-26 W. The transfer will take almost an hour with public transport, so the most convenient way to start your time is with a hire car directly from the airport. If arriving by train or bus, there are also car hire locations in the city -- for instance, in Tunnel Road or Patton Avenue.
Asheville has wonderfully breathtaking scenic routes; however, these routes are also very steep in some places and it is important to shift to a lower gear instead of breaking down on your way. If braking too much, the brakes can overheat and, in the worst case scenario, stop working altogether. Drive slowly through the winding roads in and around Asheville as well, especially in winter, with snow and ice possibly on the streets. Ensure the hire car has winter tires, make sure to adjust your speed, and have some extra snacks and thermos flasks ready in the car in case you get stuck.
The I-240 goes right through the heart of Asheville and the I-40 is a major route connecting many places, so these roads can be congested when commuters come into Asheville in the morning between around 7-9am and leave the city between 5-8pm. If going west, the US-23 can be an alternate route, depending on your ultimate goal.

I did not end up getting a rental because they did not have any available nor did any other Enterprise in the Asheville area. They called me two hours before I was supposed to pick the car up to tell me that they did not have it at all.

There was a fee of $150 on a $94 rental that was not disclosed until I went to pick the car up. There needs to truth in pricing. It’s a little late to decide when you are there to pick the car up.

Kayak gave me the wrong address and even city for my rental. I reserved in Asheville but my car was in brevard which was 40 min away. I resolved the issue but the enterprise staff on site were not very creative in their problem solving.

Reserved a rental for use in fall trip for lots of open air driving. Needless to say that reserving a car (a convertible in this case) doesn’t mean anything. No convertible, no communications to ask about alternative. So, my experience was very poor. Won’t do this ever again!

They took over an hour to get it for me. Then it wasn’t clean. They said their equipment was broken so they couldn’t make it quite clean. It was filled only a quarter full of gas.

It was very difficult to find the office. It turns out it was inside a mall and there is no sign anywhere outside or inside the mall telling you where it is. We had to ask several workers at other shops in the mall - although we weren’t even sure it was even in there! Never had such a frustrating experience trying to rent a car. Once we found the counter everything went smoothly. The woman said they are not permitted to hang signage (!?)

When I rented the car I told them I wanted to pick it up at the Ashville Airport. When trying to pick up the vehicle I was told that my car was at a different location. I had to get a taxi which I had to pay $55.00 for. Also the car was dirty and the gas tank was not full. I was told that I could not drop the car off at the airport without paying $250.00 fee. Because of My early flight I was forced to dod this. My experiance with Kayak Sucked Big time. I would never use Kayak again.

I rented a manager special for $179. That wasn’t exactly cheap for three days. The manager special came and it was a minivan for me one person. The car was absolutely filthy on the outside. I had to have it washed and clean before I could attend my Luncheon in Asheville. No one was there to assist in finding the car at the Asheville airport. What a mess it is there! You go from one end of the car rental trailer outdoors to the other to get the rental and then finding the car , do t arrive in the dark. no one is there to assist you.. You just aimlessly wonder around the parking lot asking other customers how they found their car. If you don’t Purchase all of the extras, the people at the counter aren’t very nice. You feel shuttled in and shuttled out like cattle. I was asked to sign a paper that there was no outside damage or blemishes to the car without even seeing the car/Minivan. I would never rent from Thrifty again.

The car was not cleaned when we picked it up. The back seat was full of dog hair and there was mud on the floor. We did not realize it until we had passengers sit in the back seat several days later. When I told the agent at drop off that the car wasn’t cleaned I was told I may be charged for cleaning the car since I didn’t take pictures of the problem before we left the airport.

Supplier choice
I was charged an extra $200 that was supposed to be a security deposit and the funds were not released. Then I call hertz customer service and I am told this is a privately own hertz agency and they cannot help me with my account. Called the agency and they don’t answer. Really bad experience. Never hertz again
