Driving in Calabria is much like driving in other parts of Italy. While there are plenty of areas of nature and long roads, you should expect driving in the city to be more chaotic than you are used to at home. In the countryside, the drivers may be more relaxed, but don’t be surprised if the local drivers beep a lot and overtake you on narrow roads.

While the legal driving age in Italy is set at 18, many car hire companies in Calabria will require you to be at least 21 years old when collecting the vehicle. They may also apply a surcharge to the total price if the named driver is younger than 25. You will need to provide an International Driver’s Permit if your driving licence is from outside the Eu or the EEA, and you should prepare this before arriving in Italy, if possible. There is a limit of 0.5g/l of alcohol in your blood when driving, and this is actually reduced to 0.00% if the driver has had their licence for less than 3 years or is a professional driver.
