Looking to rent a car on your trip to Barcelona? The quickest and best way to see the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region is by car, rather than taking the city‘s complicated underground Metro. Barcelona is well connected with a good road network and highway that leads directly into the city, so you can access all the main attractions. In the very heart of the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona Cathedral has ample parking nearby, as does the Olympic Stadium, where there is plenty of free parking on the streets. Plus Telefonica tower, Botanic gardens, Palau Sant Jordi, and Fundacio Joan Miro are all in the area.
Barcelona has one main airport which is about 15 km outside of the city center. If you’re landing in Barcelona-El Prat Airport, you’ll find that the best car hire companies are based onsite at Terminal 1 on the ground floor near baggage claim, and at Terminal 2 at the main exit hall and near the customs offices. There are also some car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services to off-site locations.
It’s important to remember that, while you’re enjoying the cityscape from the comfort of your hire car, city center driving is pretty intense. The changeable roadway system is packed with one-way streets and narrow alleys, so take care when navigating and maybe invest in renting a GPS to aid your journey.
When you visit Barcelona‘s city center, make sure to avoid driving during the busy rush hours of 8 am to 9:30 am and the evening rush hour between pm and 8:30 pm. At these times of day you must also watch out for the many tourists and pedestrians spilling onto the roads, as well as the bikes and motorbikes that take up part of the roads. Give us the car we booked with an Automatic trans, full size and clean with gas in it. When we have trouble with a vandalism and are standing at your counter, actually call the service people yourself rather than pass it on to us. Finally, when you charge me 1500 euro for a flat tire, give me a break down of the expenses so I canfile insurance. Or, just do what you did and I’ll go to Sixt next time.

Terrible. We got to Budget and although we paid for a convertible they said they didn’t have any. They added hidden fees, including a hidden gas charge and windshield protection charge. They also ignored us when we informed them of a low tire pressure in the front right tire, which later resulted in a flat tire. 0 stars, another scamming car rental company.

First, the staff at the counter pressured me and intentionally provided misleading information regarding the vehicle insurance. Second, they assigned me a vehicle that did not match the agreed-upon specifications. Although they later exchanged it for another one, they never updated the contract. Consequently, the insurance would not have covered me because it listed a completely different vehicle.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received during my recent car rental attempt at Barcelona Airport. Despite having a confirmed reservation and providing all required details, including my credit card from Kosovo, I was informed upon arrival that Budget does not accept credit cards from my region. This refusal caused significant inconvenience and additional expenses, as I had to secure a rental from another company, GoldCar, at four times the original cost. Furthermore, at no point during the reservation process was I informed of this regional restriction, which I find unacceptable.

My flight was canceled and I was not able to pick up my vehicle when I finally arrived two days later. When I found out my flight was canceled, I called all of the phone numbers provided to me and nobody answered. I contacted Expedia as the rental was through them, and they could not help either. I lost hundreds of dollars because I couldn’t change or refund my agreement.

Rented a car and when we arrived the office was closed at the time it should have been opened. They have good prices but you can see the things they overlook. This is the same company that charged us 150 euros because the car was returned "too dirty" (it was not). Last time I try to use them. Avoid this company. At Barcelona airport, just go for the companies that open until late: Sixt and Europcar.

When picking up my vehicle, they insisted I take a hybrid vehicle saying it was going to get better mileage for the price and save me on gas but it had worse mileage compared to the vehicle I had reserved, so I really just paid more for gas and more for the vehicle they upsold me on. There was no financial benefit.

Everything was great with the rental until we dropped the car off in Madrid after 10 days and discovered we didn't have a spare tire for the whole trip. We were lucky that we never needed the spare. Not great attention to detail by Hertz in Barcelona. Lesson learned I will always check the spare tire from now on.

I travel to Barcelona teice a year. I usually rent with Hertz, but I’ve also rented with lower cost car rentals. This customer service experience was the worst I’ve ever had. The way the person at the counter, Mikey (Michael?) treated me was unconscionable. I had forgotten my passport and he said is needed for check in. I understand that, but the rudeness, the sheer nastiness was shocking. I was carrying some plants (half the size of a carryon) and I asked if I could leave them in a corner of the spacious store since I had to go and get my passport and come back. First Mikey said “I don’t take any responsibility (in the nastiest tone)which I said I totally understood. Then he said with a loud voice that I could not at all. I’m not young and carrying the plants back and forth was hard, the mistreatment for no reason felt harder. This customer service not only did not go the extra mile, he was plainly abusive. Ruined my morning. Never again. Just appalling.

The garage at this Sixt location is just not acceptable. It's single lane, and you have to park 6 or 7 levels underground. Meaning if you have to let a car pass, you may have to reverse 6 or 7 stories back up to ground level. It's also so narrow that it's almost impossible to get your car into a spot. We witnessed sheer chaos as people tried to figure this out. There was yelling and screaming. People unable to drive manual in the garage and burning up their clutch and tires. A huge traffic jam was created on a major street because of this.

I was contacted after returning the car that there was a dent in the car. In fact there was a scratch at it was noted on the record upon pickup. Only after producing a full video of the car with existing damage was the charged apparently dropped but without any courtesy email or apology.

My family had been waiting for 3 hours, all my schedules were way behind the plan. Finally, the car had been returned and it only had 15% gas remain. Upon Arriving at airport we waited almost an hour for shuttle to return. Another couple had been waiting long before us, and they decided to catch a cab. We were about to do the same, but shuttle showed up. Staff was great, helpful and the vehicle was new, so super happy about that. Upon dropping off vehicle, the staff member insisted had had gone way over on the mileage, and how big of a deal it was going to be: Upon the realization he was wrong, by almost 700km, he was apologetic. Was still frustrating. Had a long wait for shuttle back to airport as well. Overall though, good experience.
