Don't get scammed!!! I booked with Avis through QEEQ with the belief that AVIS is a reputable brand. After booking, I read countless reviews about people being scammed by AVIS at SJO and LIR in Costa Rica, so I came fully prepared: international driver’s license, printed voucher, Visa insurance letter and policy, and I even videoed the car at pickup and drop-off. It didn’t matter. I booked a full-size/premium SUV for $698.75 USD and was given a Nissan X-Trail instead, a lower-class vehicle, while being told it was “equivalent.” It isn’t. No price adjustment was offered. The final bill came to $1,136.78 USD, over $400 more than booked—with charges that don’t resemble the original agreement at all. I was told at pickup that it would be corrected at drop-off. It wasn’t. At drop-off, they refused to provide proper documentation. The inspection just said “All Good”, no signature, no name, no receipt. The agent wouldn’t even identify themselves. The damage deposit is still being held by Avis (not Visa), despite their terms stating it should be released after return with no damage. Instead, they later claimed it takes 15–30 days, contradicting their own agreement. Avis Costa Rica operates as a franchise, so AVIS International has no authority over them and they've become a fraudulent operation consistently scamming tourists, ignoring booking contracts, adding extra erroneous fees, refusing to release the credit card holds, refusing proper documentation, refusing to follow their own terms and agreements that they provide you with and there is zero recourse. Don't get scammed. Book elsewhere, AVIS will be more expensive and far more stressful than elsewhere.

When I arrived to pick up the car, they said they didn't have my car and that I booked it at the wrong airport. When I insisted that they look into it further, they refused. This cost me $30 in international calls to resolve as well as $30 in Uber charges. I would like to be reimbursed.

The vehicle was fine, but my $140 reservation ended up being $504 by the time they added all the "mandatory fees". They refused to accept my insurance. It's one thing to have a few taxes or roadside assistance to pay, but the final cost was more than triple what I was quoted!

They charges us an additional 400 dollars on the day of pick up even though i had already paid the full price plus bought the additional insurance from Kayak website . They said i have to pay the additional fee which includes there own insurance or else they will not release the car . They said my problem was that i bought the insurance from Kayak and not them so if i dont want it i should go on the website and cancel . They already knew that i cant cancel cause it was less than 24 hours . What a scam . very disappointing from Kayak website to advertise and offer their services on your website . Never again

We had cut our trip shorter by four days and the price quoted changed very little. When I questioned this I was told because I HAD to purchase additional insurance on the car we were driving. Also, our flight left before the dealer opened so I was told I had to leave the car at the airport, but not where at the airport. There are no signs or public parking lots around the airport so I drove around asking people where to leave it at 4:00 am in the morning, but no one knew. I finally took it to Payless and parked it in the front and took an Uber back to the airport. It was a real hassle.

They quote a low price but require extra insurance that was 3 times the quoted price. We rented for 4 weeks. The quoted price was 750$. The mandatory insurance was 2,100$. Our total price was almost 3,000$!! Run like mad away from this scam car rental company.

The car that was provided was sub standard at best When I booked I requested a 4WD. At the time of renting I particularly asked if the vehicle was 4WD and the company said yes. But it was not a 4WD and I had trouble driving the hilly areas of Costa Rica and Manuel Antonio. In addition, the accelerator pedal of the car got occasionally stuck. So the car was accelerating even when I wasn’t pressing the accelerator pedal. It was a big safety hazard. I would not recommend NU Car Rentals

All of the NU representatives were cordial and helpful. During my stay I got a flat tire, they responded quickly and had the tire fixed in a matter of minutes and we were on our way. This is the second time I have rented from them and I will definitely do it again.

There was a minor scratch at the bottom of the front bumper which is not visible unless you are on your knees. As far as I am concerned we didn’t do anything to cause it. It may be already there and we didn’t notice when we took the care at midnight. At any rate my gripe is with how they handled this situation. We bought most expensive coverage possible with them which is twice the rental price itself. But during checkout they stalled us because of this issue even though we told them that we are cutting too close to our departure time and requested them to call the insurance and get it reimbursed because we already bought the coverage. But they insisted on us calling them and we couldn’t because we didn’t have local mobile plan. After lot of back and forth they checked other contracts on the vehicle and probably figured out that the damage was already there and the let us off the hook. It was a happy ending but the whole drama could have been avoided if they had customer service at the forefront of their minds.

I paid for insurance but i am not sure the insurance information provided was correct. I am told by my credit card company that the car insurance on rental vehicles is included as a feature on my credit card. Dollar car rental at Costa Rica airport was not accepting the insurance from my credit card.

Windshield wipers were awful…made driving in rain unsafe During pick up, the rep said there was no street address and if I didn’t drop a pin I would never find the rental return. Alamo sent a drop off email with perfect directions. Unnecessary anxiety. Drop was fast, friendly and efficient.

We requested a car seat. I called to make sure one would be available. The car seat they provided was cheap and much too small for my son. Nobody at the place even knew how to take the car seat out of the base. Was very disappointed.

Luis in Tamarindo was great! I rented I San Jose and told them I needed to drop it in Tamarindo and then get back to town where I was staying. San Jose didn't let me know that there was a location in town and instead had me driving 1.4hrs to the airport. Luis worked things out and didn't even charge me an extra drop off fee since i only used ¼ tank of gas. Aldo San Jose said I would need a full tank of gas and charged me for that. All worked in the end , thanks to Luis.

I’ve read mixed reviews about car rentals in Costa Rica with some people having poor experiences, but that wasn’t my experience. I had a little trouble finding the shuttle at the airport and I didn’t like having to put a $3k deposit down to avoid adding 3rd party insurance, but otherwise things went smoothly. My car was clean and solid, and I didn’t have any delays or issues. Would rent again.

Forced to upgrade when we arrived 30 minutes early because apparently original car wasn’t ready yet. Had dents on all sides. Bought extra insurance from kayak/priceline from email soliciting it. Budget didn’t accept that and forced us to put a $3000 deposit or buy their insurance after we already bought insurance through the booking company. Very rude staff. Car was 4 time than quoted rate. Charged us $130 for 1/4 tank of gas. Terrible experience.

Although it was advertised as in terminal, it really is not. Only thing they do at the terminal is checking the reservation and you are shuttled to other location. Waited 15 minutes for the shuttle. Also it's almost been a week and I still haven't got my deposit back.

Personnel at San Jose office was rude! He was upselling the car insurance which I told him isn’t necessary as we have coverage through Chase Sapphire Reserve which is the credit card I used to book reservations. He was unhappy that we declined the insurance and was very rude from then on. It was a real sad first impression of Costa Rica citizens.

Only real thing I liked was how close it was to the airport and there being a shuttle. Otherwise, the first challenge was the insurance up sale. I purchased insurance during booking but then still had to purchase more insurance upon arrival. The first car I rented had such a small engine we had to return it. Then the second SUV was quite dirty and we could not connect the phone to it and while figuring that out the battery died. So, on the spot they had to replace the battery. Grateful they did then but imagine if we had drove off into the 4 hours drive ahead of us without a new battery? Basically, super mediocre if not sub par service.

I would have liked to be able to speak to someone. The "emergency" phone number was useless and I could not contact anyone. It would have been nice to be able to speak to a human. It was a good thing I did not have a problem or need roadside assistance. The car they originally gave me was in good shape but missing a hubcap. That was swapped out. The next car was beat up, covered with dents and scratches and not delivered full of fuel. Not a good first impression.

The car Rental experience was mediocre however it took an hour to do paper work. The site is not straight forward with fees. I asked for a different location drop off quote, and once I was at the rental place they charge $50.00 extra. Furthermore they won’t take the insurance protection provided by the credit card unless you bring a letter from the credit card stating that. So beware, a $40.00 dollars par day rent turns out to be over a $100.00 per day. What can you do better, so you ask? LET CUSTOMERS KNOW UPFRONT OF HIDDEN FEES, SO THYE CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION. (I am not intending to yell by using capital letters, I am just trying to help you do better)

The car I hired (a 4x4) was not available on pickup. After a 12 hour flight we were offered a small car or they would takes us back to the airport! Which was no good to us as we were staying 3 hour drive away. We took the small car but it took an hour to process and the sales assistant was rude and unhelpful. We eventually got given the keys to the car but was not told anything. We had to ask what fuel it took. We were given no instructions on the car use etc. Drop off was easier.

Pickup and drop off went well. The car itself needed maintenance, the brakes were worn out, wobbled the vehicle when braking hard, which was critical down the many many hills. The car also shivered over 100kmh. Had about 50k miles on it, but given the roads in Costa Rica those were hard miles.

Horrible experience. The lady that sits at the front desk with Usave is unbelievably rude, not only to me but to all of the customers she deals with. When we had trouble with the rental (they lied saying it was 4WD or AWD) she was nasty in WhatsApp messages (I still have them). Overall horrible experience, too many rental car places to fall victim to Usave’s handling of their customers. Never again. And stop recommending this place to travelers.

Kayak quoted us a price with insurance and once we arrived in country, we were told we needed to pay an additional $300 for insurance as the country did not recognize the insurance Kayak had sold us in the rental contract. Very dissatisfied.

Price was not what was expected. Got hassled into a specific coverage once arrived in Costa Rica. Paid for the extra rental coverage at checkout to avoid issues. Was told by rental company that the insurance I purchased was not proper coverage and was a waste of money. My price for rental was supposed to be 213$ probably some taxes and fees to be expected, but in order to walk out with a car I had to pay 666$. Not entirely a great way to start a trip.

This company is a scam. They didn’t even have the car. I had to have 4 wheel drive for the location I was staying. I paid for a 4 wheel drive. They didn’t have it. They had a beat up car. I couldn’t get my money back from them. They said there was nothing they could do. I should have read these reviews on this company before. I normally do and of course when I slacked, I had the worst experience with a rental company of my life. I paid for 2 weeks rental and never even took a car. Total scam!

It took 2 hours because the shuttles were full, then traffic was bad for the 2 mile drive to the rental place. Then really misleading pricing- I had to pay an additional $600 total for insurance that should’ve been baked into the price originally. On top of a $2500 deposit (pending). They tried to haggle and negotiate this additional tax price when I got to the rental counter. 2 other families in there were fighting the same issue. Same story when we returned the car- tons of pissed off people forced to pay hundreds more than budgeted because of false marketing. Also the car was a total POS. We had trouble accelerating quickly which was quite dangerous in Costa Rica. Navigation didn’t work so had to hold our phones manually

A total scam - they charge enormous fees for insurance. I brought a copy of my credit card contract and they refused to let me get its coverage. It cost more for the insurance than the actual rental. Avoid these guys and go with someone who is legitimate and honest. I will never rent from them again. Ever!

So the garage tried to charge me a $2500 deductible straight off of my credit card and then I told him that that was not discussed prior to him trying to charge it and I said hey there was a guy at the airport that told me he could do it for $300 deductible and 350 for the week and so then he said OK I can match that point being negotiation is definitely required with This company. Whatever they offer you lowball them and they will probably meet your offer. Hope this helps. I will say the comfortable car and reliable in the mountains. They provided was really good. It was called vGV

i am surprised that Kayak would recommend a sub par car rental. i took Kayak's referral to be qualified and accountable. i will never take a Kayak referral seriously again. -full sized suv would not fit 4 persons w/luggage -having to change vehicles causing an sizeable $$ upgrade -alternate vehicle was in poor condition with no other viable choice to make -gas in alternate vehicle was "just under half." what does that mean? -constant ball bearing or axle grinding noise -**power steering did not work taking 2 hands to make minimal turns. by the time of drop off, vehicle was unmanageable with potential for an accident. -zero to none accountability by drop off staff. A DISASTER.

It was terrible, they didn't send a shuttle to pick us up from the airport, even after repeated phone calls and assurances they were sending someone. After waiting for over 45 minutes, and having to get a taxi to the rental store location, it was closed... it was 8:30pm but their website clearly stated they were open until 10pm. After finally getting someone to open the gate, they informed me that they didn't have the car available for us and they were unable (unwilling) to work something else out for our group of 10. I DON NOT RECOMMEND THEM AT ALL!

No one should ever rent from this company. They are fraudulent. They operate on the bait and switch model of offering low rates to rent the car and then DEMANDING 3 times more money for insurance than the car rental rate. Our price to rent a car for 17 days was $307. We brought our proof of insurance and our entire insurance policy with declarations as well as a credit card which provides car rental insurance. EC Rent a Car would not accept this and demanded $960 for car insurance and a $500 deposit on our credit card before we could rent the car. Let that sink in. $307 to rent the car and $960 for insurance, for 17 days. It’s a scam. We met a Canadian couple on the shuttle to the airport with the same complaint. They paid 300% more for the insurance than the actual car rental rate they were quoted. Additionally EC Rent a Car has vehicles in terrible shape. Our car died and had to be towed away on our 2nd day of vacation. We lost an entire day of vacation. They would not compensate us for the loss of use of the vehicle. The replacement vehicle had faulty brake lights making it unsafe. DO NOT EVER RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY. YOU WILL REGRET IT! It’s a SCAM.

They did not show up for pick-up because it was supposedly closed even after paying the tax for after hours pick-up, had to take uber to the accommodation and back to the airport to take the car the next day which was all out of my pocket of course. Also they wouldn't refund if I'd cancelled so I was forced to take the car or lose the money. Stuff did not care or there was a language barrier maybe. CDW is not included in the rental price which I didn't know (my fault), but I was surprised with and additional 30$ per day. The car was ok (jimny), but we received a rock which cracked the windshield and had to pay an additional 600$ for the damages, which seems excesive. The shuttle bus driver was friendly and funny

The company has hidden charges and will not accept the purchase of the kayak additional insurance. As such I had to pay extra for the companies insurance. The car was in running condition but the breaks would squeak anytime I pressed them sounded like it was rubbing the rotors overall experience was mediocre. They gave me a car that ran but would rather have paid more upfront for a reputable agency with quality vehicles and that wouldn’t try to price gouge in order to receive the car.
