  • Car hire in Podgorica is easy enough to organise, and a good idea, seeing as some of the major tourist attractions in this part of Montenegro are a little way outside of the town. The first one worth making a day trip of is Niagara Falls, although they’re not as high as the North America namesake. Dajbabe Monastery is another worthwhile site: a church built in 1897 inside a cave. The Petrovic Palace, which also houses the Montenegro Contemporary Art Centre inside its original 19th-century pink walls. The most prominent human-made structure in Podgorica is Millennium Bridge across the Moraca River, which you can marvel at as you drive across it.
  • You’ll arrive in the city at Podgorica Airport, which is well serviced by many of the largest car hire companies in Europe. You’ll see them all lined up ahead of you as you exit customs after the luggage carousel pick-up area, including Avis, Hertz or Europcar. You can then collect your vehicle from the opposite airport’s main terminal as you exit. Once you have your Podgorica car hire all sorted out, the centre of town is a mere 12.6 km (about 8 miles) drive away.
  • Most of the roads in and entering Podgorica are in very good condition and traffic is very light, but there are some local standards and regulations to which you should pay attention. Firstly, it’s mandatory to drive with your headlights dipped at all times of the day. You should also add a little bit of extra time to any trip, to cater for the occasional roadworks, detours around monasteries and narrow roads in the area. Budget for about 20 to 30min extra when you have car hire in Podgorica and are planning your sightseeing trips.
  • Rush hour is pretty much a foreign concept here, so you can relax completely on that front. Some roads can get at least a little busy at seemingly random times.     The areas just around Podgorica offers some of the best driving in the Balkans, so you are free to choose the car you’re going to enjoy the most. One hint is that it’s actually better to get a saloon rather than a 4WD or MPV, because the rural roads can become quite narrow and the area is mountainous. It will also help you to find parking more easily in the centre of town. In winter you’ll probably need to make sure that your hire car is equipped with snow chains as you may need them if it’s a severe season.

  • What’s the speed limit in Podgorica?

    The local police enforce the speed limits very strictly, so take the signs very seriously. In the centre of town you can drive at a maximum of 50km/h (approx. 30mph) and on the highways around the rest of Montenegro you need to keep to 80km/h (just under 49mph). Be very careful though, because this can quickly change to as low as 20km/h (around 12mph) in some places where the roads are more narrow.

Be very careful and aware when dealing with the sales agents as they will constantly try to upsell you and squeeze more money out of you. My flight was cancelled and rebooked for the following day and they "gave out" my rental car to someone else and only had more expensive models for me to pay an additional cost for eventhough my booking was for 2 weeks and I was less than 24 hours late... The sales agent said for an extra 30 euros they will add GPS navigation into the car and when I declined the car came standard with GPS navigation anyways so they were trying to get more money out of me without actually adding in any features. Price and car were fair, but be careful of their scummy techniques they use here as they will try to trick you.

Long wait to get the car while the family sweltered in the hear. Car had warning lights from the time we drove away that they said afterward the knew about but don’t inform people of (tire pressure). Incredible deposit (3000 euros) required to rent if you don’t pay for their insurance. They make you pay the parking ticket on the car. But inexpensive. You get what you pat for. I will just pay more in the future.

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with the way my rental was handled by Budget. The rental price shown to me was $336 USD, yet I was charged €666 for the rental alone, which is completely unacceptable and almost double the amount I was originally quoted. On top of that, I was also charged an additional €300 as a deposit/pre-authorization. I paid far more than the agreed rental price, and this entire experience has been extremely misleading and unacceptable. This is honestly shameful and reflects very poorly on both Budget and your website. I expect a clear explanation for why I was charged €666 instead of the agreed $336, along with an immediate review and refund of any unjustified charges. I expect this matter to be taken seriously and resolved promptly. I will not accept being overcharged without a proper explanation.

The agent at the counter would not rent me the car without selling me insurance for €30/day despite me having adequate insurance through my credit card. Everyone else before and after me in the lineup experienced the same. I had not pre-payed so I walked away and used another rental company at the airport. There was no mention of being obligated to purchase their additional insurance when I made the booking.

Nowhere is mentioned that when you rent a car for only one day you have to pay at least 60 euro’s of additional insurance. On too of already exciting ensuring. You are notified off this at the pickup counter at Podgorica airport. It is beyond bad, terribly terrible service and information. If it would be possible I would file suit against this almost criminal behaviour.
