KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Geelong

  • Wrapping around Port Phillip Bay, picking up a hire car will open up attractions on the outskirts of Geelong. Take a trip to Adventure Park Geelong for a splash and slide or head further along Bellarine Hwy towards Queenscliff. It's possible to reach popular coastal towns such as Torquay and Barwon Heads in less than 30min by car, while bus services take approximately double the time. Whether you’ll be spending time in Geelong West, the waterfront or along the Barwon River, having a hire car provides a direct route from your accommodation to attractions, reducing travel time and allowing more time to enjoy the city.
  • The service offices of all hire companies at Avalon Airport (AVV) are located within the main terminal building. Significantly smaller than major capital airports, you’ll be able to walk to pick up your vehicle in a matter of minutes. If flying to Melbourne International Airport (MEL), head to the car hire facility directly across from Terminal 2, on the ground floor. The vehicles of all companies other than Europcar are within walking distance from the car hire facility, with Europcar providing a free shuttle service.
  • Take extra caution when driving in the CBD of Geelong as the area attracts a large number of locals and holidaymakers. There are several railway level crossings throughout the city that you may need to navigate, ensuring not to cross when the signals are flashing and booms are down. Be careful when driving on rural roads surrounding Geelong as they’re likely to not be as well-lit as the centre of town.
  • Peak hour traffic is worse between 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:00 on Geelong roads. While not quite as congested as major cities across Australia, key arterial roads like Malop St reduce to a slow pace. Traffic can be especially troublesome along Princes Hwy in the evening as commuters return from work in Melbourne. It’s best to avoid it on weekdays; however, weekends are usually fine.
  • With a Geelong hire car, you'll be close to one of Australia's most iconic coastal drives: the Great Ocean Road. Technically, the road starts in Torquay, which is around 30min from Geelong. It travels along the coast and through Great Otway National Park. You can stop at Bells Beach, one of Australia's best surfing beaches. Airey's Inlet Lighthouse and the Twelve Apostles rock formation are two popular photo-opp spots along the way. Lorne and Port Cambell are two of the best towns for overnight stops. Without stops, it takes around 5 hours one way, but a multi-day trip with stops is the preferred route. Remember to keep an eye out for animals, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • If you prefer to pick up your hire car in Geelong rather than at the airport, you can get into the city using the MyBus Airport Transfers from Avalon Airport (AVV). You'll need to book at least two business days before your flight, and it has a modest fee per passenger; this includes the airport surcharge that also applies to taxis from the airport. You can find multiple  Geelong car hire offices, particularly on or around the Esplanade close to Western Beach. Sunnycars, Hertz, Thrifty and SIXT are among the major providers available.
  • You'll usually need to be at least 21 years old to get a hire car in Geelong. You'll also need a full licence that's been valid for at least one year. These rules will apply to both the primary hirer and any additional drivers. While credit cards are the preferred method of payment, most Australian car hire companies also accept debit cards issued by Mastercard or Visa. The name on your card will need to match the name on the main hirer's licence. Companies that include third-party insurance automatically in the price of your hire are good choices for cheap car hire in Geelong.
  • Small rental cars in Geelong are around 44% cheaper than other car types, on average

Luxury SUV

KAYAK
First of all, service was too slow. Had to wait around 45 mins to have someone to look into my booking. Then they have made up their own rule of not accepting digital license which wasn’t mentioned anywhere in my booking. I had to return to collect physical license card which I never had to carry in last 3 years. Then I was supposed to receive a luxury suv ( Audi Q5 or similar) but they said they do not carry any luxury car only MG or Nissan. I have paid for a luxury suv but offered a Nissan x-trail basic model which was a complete rip off. I never thought Kayak could trick a client like this to increase their booking. I am planning to lodge formal complaint about this. And at the end of all this drama- they have handed over the car but decided not clean it. I could not be bothered asking them to clean it just gave up and picked up whatever they had. I have never had such bad experience in renting car before.
