- Having a car hire in Beijing will afford you much more independence and allow you to explore the city's many attractions on your own terms. It will also allow you to travel wherever you want outside of the city to nearby towns and attractions that may be difficult to access via public transport or expensive via taxi.
- You can pick up your Beijing car hire from Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). However, if you don't yet have your Chinese driver's licence when you land, you will need to wait until you acquire this before getting your hire vehicle, so you may wish to utilise one of the many car hire services in the city centre instead. Either way, we recommend booking ahead through KAYAK, so you can be confident in your plans.
- The only way you can drive a car hire in Beijing is if you have a Chinese driver's licence. If you have a visitor visa that allows three months of stay, you can get a provisional Chinese driver's licence. You will need to take your passport, local driver's licence and translations of these documents to a service centre, where you should be issued a licence within a few hours. When driving your car hire in Beijing, if someone behind you sounds their horn signalling they want to overtake you, you are expected to move to the right as quickly as you can (so long as it is safe) and allow them to do so. Right turns on red are allowed in Beijing as long as you come to a complete stop first.
- While it is generally the rule that cars drive on the right side of the road, it is not uncommon to see vehicles driving down the left side, particularly cyclists and motorcyclists. This is especially true on roads outside the city, where drivers may switch lanes to avoid potholes; in these situations, you are expected to do what you safely can to avoid them, including pull over to the side of the road and stop. You will also find that drivers turning left tend to move into the opposite lane of traffic and turn from there before switching to the right lane. In general, when driving in Beijing, stick to the rules yourself but don't expect others to do so.

What type of car is recommended for driving in Beijing?
The best type of car for your Beijing car hire will depend on how you intend to use it. If you intend to drive it mostly within the city, especially close to the city centre, you may find a smaller car more optimal due to heavy traffic and the low number of parking spaces. If you are travelling outside the city, a raised vehicle such as a 4WD might be preferable as the roads can be prone to potholes and poor surfacing.

Speed limits in Beijing vary depending on the location and type of road you are driving on. On city roads with only one lane each way, the limit is 30 km/h. On China National Highways, the limit is between 40 km/h and 80 km/h. It’s 70 km/h on major city roads with multiple lanes and two yellow lines, 100 km/h on express roads and 120 km/h on expressways.
