Bastia car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Bastia

Do not rent electric cars in Corsica, it is very difficult to manage. The renter said that there are plenty of charging station but it is not true, the majority are slow, many are in holiday camps/campings and not that easily accessible. And I travelled during the low season, I can't imagine how painful it would be during the July-August season.

Know which charging card the car rental company will offer (e-motum, freshmile, etc) and if that charging card aligns with the charging stations at or near your accommodations. Find out where the above charging stations are located, and which ones are the fast ones vs slow ahead of time. Know how to setup the car/station to be charged. It's easy once you know how, but difficult to do the first or second time without having had any guidance or instruction

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Bastia

  • Take in the beautiful scenes of nature as you drive through the region of Upper Corsica in your hire car. Having a car will enable you to drive to numerous islands and relax on their sandy beaches. Sports activities like surfing, fishing, or hiking are also possible. Bastia offers plenty of historical and cultural attractions along with an exciting nightlife. With a car you’ll be able to visit local bars and clubs for some nighttime entertainment.
  • Travelers to the French Riviera often fly into the Bastia-Poretta Airport. Offering numerous shops and services, you’ll find it easy to rent a car from this facility. Once you’re off the plane, you’ll take just a short walk through the arrivals hall, where you’ll find numerous hire car agencies including Alamo, Budget, and Hertz.
  • There are many winding roads around the islands so you’ll need to be extra-cautious. Additionally, Bastia has strict driving laws about being distracted. Note that you could get pulled over for eating or talking on the phone without a headset while driving.
  • Traffic is busiest around Bastia in the summer months. Because of its small population, rush hour is typically not a major problem but it can still get congested at times. This is mostly around the downtown area during the peak commuting hours of 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. in the morning and 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. in the evening.
  • Medium rental cars in Bastia are around 39% cheaper than other car types, on average

Speed limits are pretty simple to remember in Bastia and Corsica. When you are driving in and around the town, keep your speed down to 50 km (or 31 mph). Once you are on the highway, if it is more like an interstate, the maximum speed allowed will be 90 km (or 55 mph). Outside of the city on the motorways you can travel at speeds of up to 110 km (or 68 mph). Note that there are speed cameras everywhere around Bastia.

  • Where are the best places to park in Bastia?

Parking in the evening and on weekends is easy to find in Bastia, even on the street. 1. We clearly specified, when booking the car, that we did not want an electric car as we know that charging stations are limited in Corsica. However, the only option upon arrival was an electric car. As a result I had to do some distance to charge my car between my village and the right charging station. The nearest one was not even fast enough to charge the car so I had to go 9km farther to find a super charger. 2. When picking up the car, we had to wait more than 40 minutes as there was only one staff attending the clients. It was quite late (10.00pm) but during school holidays, the renter should plan enough staff to operate at scale

We thought we were getting a gasoline automatic compact car for this rental, but upon arrival at the Hertz location we were notified we were being switched to an electric car. Hindsight, we would likely have adjusted our travel plans and day by day itinerary had we known we were getting an electric car and the challenges we would face with it. As part of the pickup process, I would recommend your agent(s) ask the customer if they are familiar with electric cars and how to charge them. If not, they should provide a quick hands-on demonstration or at least instruction sheet on how to set up the car for charging. At our first charging point, we ended up figuring this out on the fly trying to reference the cars manuals (in an other language) and googling online. Eventually we figured the process out but we probably wasted an hour in doing so. In addition to that we were sold an e-motum card to make charging easier and more convenient. Unfortunately our first charging station we picked from the app happened to be a very slow charging station (would have taken 6+ hours to charge) so once we realized this, we had to abandon that charging station and drive somewhere else to find a fast charger. I would recommend your agents speak to this as well during the car pickup process as that knowledge for electric newbies like us would have saved us a lot of time and we could have planned our trip accordingly. The other issue we ran into is that the hotel we were staying at only had freshmile charging stations. I'm assuming freshmile would have a similar card program like e-motum, and that would have been more helpful for us as when we get back to the hotel each night, we could put the vehicle on charge for the next day. Instead, we had to seek out an e-motum station on our way back each day, sit in a parking lot for an hour while it recharged before we could go back to the hotel. I'm not sure if freshmile cards are offered through Hertz or not, but that would have been better in our case vs e-motum. Aside from the challenges above related to the nuances of electric, the reservation, pickup and dropoff process were otherwise good. Mike
