Top tips for renting a car in Caribbean

  • While hopping between the islands, you might stumble upon different terrains and driving conditions, so there's no "one size fits all" with car hire. In mountainous areas, like Jamaica, consider a car with good grip and handling, like a 4x4. When cruising around flatter islands, like Aruba, a comfy sedan will do. Be cautious during the wet season (June to November), as flash floods are common and some routes might be less accessible. Always pop a sun hat in the car; you'll thank us later.
  • Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a prime spot to grab your hired car and hit the lively north coast. Over in the Bahamas, Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) offers a breezy start to explore those stunning blue waters. Don't overlook Trinidad's Piarco International Airport (POS) either; it's a great springboard for exploring the twin-island nation and maybe even catching a ferry to Tobago. Each island is different, so make sure you do your homework before you arrive.
  • If you're going to use ferry services to move between islands, like between Trinidad and Tobago, make sure to square it with your car hire agency first. You'll need to secure written permission from them, and they might ask for specific documentation. Be prepared, as this can sometimes involve additional fees. Ensuring everything is clear with your agency will guarantee a smooth and enjoyable adventure across these tropical paradises.
  • While venturing through the Caribbean, you'll notice a few quirks that set the region apart. In Trinidad and Tobago, always carry cash, as many petrol stations don't accept cards. In Barbados, it's customary to honk your horn as a friendly greeting or to signal letting someone into your lane. In the Bahamas, you'll find roads in central Nassau are often one-way; acquaint yourself with the road patterns to avoid detours. Moreover, anticipate unexpected roadblocks in Jamaica due to impromptu street parties, adding a splash of local festivity to your travel itinerary.

  • Should I hire a car in the Caribbean?

Hiring a car in the Caribbean can be a brilliant idea, especially if you're keen to explore beyond the typical tourist spots at your own pace. Imagine winding down coastal roads with stunning ocean views, easily accessible only by car. In islands like Puerto Rico, hiring a car lets you visit gems like El Yunque Rainforest and the luminous Mosquito Bay without relying on tour schedules or public transport. Moreover, on larger islands, you'll find that car hire can save you time, giving you the freedom to explore lesser-known beaches and attractions, away from the crowds.

  • What is driving like in the Caribbean?

The driving style can differ quite significantly across various islands. In Jamaica, you might find a more energetic, sometimes hectic driving culture compared to the more laid-back vibe in Barbados. While cruising around, you'll notice the majority of the islands use the left side of the road, a nod to their British colonial history. In the Dominican Republic, it's right-hand driving, so be ready to switch gears. Road conditions can vary: while you'll find well-maintained roads in Puerto Rico, some islands have less polished pathways, making for a rustic driving experience.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in the Caribbean?

Alright, let's talk about age requirements for car hire in the Caribbean. Generally, the minimum age to hire a car here is 21, but it can vary between countries and companies. In some places, you'll find firms allowing 18-year-olds to hire, yet others might set the bar at 25. If you're under 25, keep an eye out for potential young driver surcharges, which can be a bit steep. Regarding driving licences, a valid one from your home country usually suffices, but an International Driving Permit can sometimes be a necessity. It's always a bright idea to check the specifics of your destination before you set off.
