If you are traveling south better a 4×4 For north smaller car should do it
Verified travelerJun 2025
The warnings for this area are real. We had our rental car broken into on the second day we were there. With the full-coverage insurance offered from National, they simply swapped the car and we continued with our trip. Do your self the favor and buy the coverage.

Make sure the car company is at the airport. Choose a reliable brand like Hertz or Enterprise. Expect the customer service in Chile to not be the same as US (it'll be worse)
Verified travelerNov 2024
Show up with your driver’s license and passport to pick up the car. They are located inside the underground parking lot on level -1, not at the street level.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Down load what’s app. They use it to communicate with you. They meet you at the airport with a plaque with your name. They really need your flight and arrival time. The $10/ day insurance was worth it. Print it before hand to show agent incase.

Driving in Chile was straightforward overall and pretty average of all the countries I've driven in. The electronic toll device inside the car was very useful.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Santiago

  • Santiago, Chile has a lot to offer, from the Museo Interactivo Mirador to the Fantasilandia Amusement Park, and many other wonderful parks dotted around. The most convenient and flexible way to see all the major attractions is by renting a car for your stay to make sure you see everything according on your own terms. Don’t waste time and energy with public transport and expensive cabs, but get your own wheels and make the most of your visit.
  • Santiago’s International Airport is about 11 miles from Santiago center, so it is a great way to start the trip by picking up a car directly at the airport’s hire car desks. Follow the signs upon arrival to the car center and choose from various companies, including Alamo, Europcar, and Sixt. The fastest way into Santiago is via the Costanera Norte (to the Plaza de Armas).
  • Santiago is a big metropolitan city and, therefore, can have lots of traffic, so patience is definitely a must when driving in the city. Having said that, it is much easier to find an alternative route with a car than being stuck in traffic with a bus where travelers are dependent on the route the bus has to follow. When venturing outside of the city to explore the beautiful Chilean countryside, traffic decreases dramatically and a great ride is practically guaranteed.
  • Rush hour in Santiago is a time to be avoided, if possible, as the cars are moving even slower than in regular traffic and waiting times can go up to one hour. Usually, rush hour is on weekdays between 8 and 9:30 am and 6 and 8:30 pm, and downtown gets especially clogged up with commuters.
  • Small rental cars in Santiago are around 29% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about renting a car in Santiago

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Santiago?

Bear in mind that most cars in Chile are stick shift, so, if you are not used to driving a manual car, prepare to pay more to rent an automatic one. Generally, a smaller car is a wise choice when driving in the city, as it squeezes through the lanes easier and can fit into more of the limited parking spaces the city has to offer.

  • What’s the speed limit in Santiago?

Speed limits are given in km/h in Santiago and in all of Chile. In the city, there is a maximum speed limit of 50-60 km/h (31-38 mph). Rural country roads allow up to 100 km/h (62 mph) and the highway permits 120 km/h (75 mph). Always look for posted signs and adhere to the given speed limits, even if residents go faster.

  • Where are the best places to park in Santiago?

Street parking in Santiago is metered, so always check at the sign to learn what the time restrictions are and how much it costs. Alternatively, there are also parking garages and lots available, such as the Republic Parking System Chile or the Republic Parking Santiago Downtown. It is also worth asking the hotel or accommodation if a parking space is included, as that would be the easiest solution. Also remember to never leave any valuables in your hire car.

  • How can I find car rentals near me in Santiago?

Take a look at our extensive car rental location map to find the best rental cars near you.

  • How much does a Small car rental cost in Santiago?

A Small car rental in Santiago costs ₱1,796 per day, on average.

  • How much does a Large car rental cost in Santiago?

The young woman who checked us in was so helpful and nice. A bit of translation difficulty but that's often the case of English speaking in Chile! When returning, we showed up as she was closing, she helped us as we had gone into the wrong parking garage...a truck blocked the view of the other entrance just beyond the one we needed. She and another employee, a young man, helped us with bags and getting back to the street...my fellow traveler is partly handicapped. They were so kind and spent a lot of extra time helping find a taxi and make sure we were safely on our way. Much appreciation to those two young people who were so kind.

Pickup and dropoff at the rental location was quick however we did have to wait 30± mins to get the van from the airport to take us to the off-site lot. I was given a Hyundai accent as an intermediate vehicle. I would normally consider this compact class but they insisted it was correct. I'm not sure who was right but it was smaller than I anticipated.

The process to check out the car took too much time. I was able to show them my prepurchased insurance through Kayak. No problems there. I change the reservation from the airport to the hotel. No problem there with increased charges. They meet you at the airport to pick you up with a sign. They used my What’s app app to contact me. Don’t disregard that. There is a person watching the app to respond. They upgraded us for the inconvenience. Person at the desk spoke English well. Nice new, maintained car. Streets in Chile are very good and cell tower will run quickly keep you informed on your maps apps. I would rent a car in Chile again.

Met at airport by a Hertz employee with a sign and brought to the offsite location via a third party shuttle. The employees were helpful, however. the quality of the vehicle was "bad". After driving for 150 kilometers in Chile, the car started to have motor noises. The next day I took the car to an agent at my destination city (Talca). They did not explain the noises and I received a new vehicle. This vehicle did not have any problems. When I return the vehicle at the airport, I was charged for a crack in the windshield. Alamo employee informed me that after a phone call to the alamo agent in Talca, He was informed that no crack was on the windshield when I received the vehicle in Talca. I did not inspect the second vehicle, I cannot confirm the statement from Alamo in Talca, however, when I originally picked up the vehicle at the airport, I was informed that the vehicle was in "excellent" condition. This was not true. How do I know the condition of the second car, after the "excellent" previous condition.

My original reservation specified a 4x4 vehicle, and I paid extra for this option. However, upon my arrival, the rental counter indicated that they did not have a 4x4 or an equivalent substitute available. I was provided with a vehicle of lesser value but was still charged the full amount for the 4x4 booking. Because I did not receive the vehicle class I paid for, I requested a partial refund or appropriate compensation for the price difference, but I never received a response.

The pick up address was not the one that I received. I found by chance trying to rent another car. They told me this is a problem they have had frequently, I suggest you update their info on your page. it was an incredible inconvenience

I had a really bad experience. They gave me an old car with a lot of damage, which was dirty inside and outside. It smelled like gas inside the car all the time, and the front desk staff were rude and unprofessional. When I rented the car, they told me to pick it up at one address, but once I got there, they told me to go to another location. I had to pay for two Ubers just to get the car. I also had to return the car one day early, but they didn’t want to refund me for the extra day. They didn’t explain the contract to me. I had to leave $1,000 as a deposit because she wasn’t able to verify if I had the insurance that I purchased through Ace Rental Car, even though I showed her the receipt and emails. Really bad service.

The car company is not called united its Chile Rent a car. Also I was told United would be at the terminal, but did not see a kiosk for them. We asked the airport they said United is offsite. We then went to the "offsite" location which was about 20 mins ($30 cab ride) away. That's where we found United is now Chile Rent a car. After doing paperwork offsite we then were told we had to go back to the airport. They initially were not going to give a shuttle but did. At that point pick up was ok, little slow but go the car. When returning the car, there was a man with no uniform on that took our car, we went to the kiosk to ask for a receipt to show that my car was indeed return. They wouldn't give one.
